Are you parenting a child in foster care or adopted from foster care who is struggling emotionally, behaviorally, or socially? Complex, developmental trauma that these children have experienced due to abuse and neglect affects their nervous systems and brain development, which often leads to a wide range of difficulties. I am passionate about working with this vulnerable population of children, ages 6-12, in the Hampton Roads area, and accept all forms of Medicaid. I provide trauma-informed therapy, with an emphasis on calming the nervous system with felt-safety, connection, and regulation. My therapeutic approaches include EMDR, play therapy, sand tray therapy, CBT, and mindfulness.
You are in the trenches of doing the sacred work of hard parenting. I consider it a privilege to be part of a child's healing journey and encourage you to take the first step and give me a call at 757-774-7405.
About me:
I obtained my LCSW in 1995 after earning an MSW from VCU in 1992 and a BA in Psychology from UVA in 1989. I am an EMDR Certified Therapist with EMDRIA, and trained in Levels 1 and 2. I received an additional certification as a clinical trauma professional. I am a seasoned psychotherapist and have worked with children in a variety of settings including residential treatment, foster care, and private practice. I worked as a Clinical Administrator for a therapeutic foster care program in Maryland and started the therapeutic foster care program at United Methodist Family Services in Virginia Beach as the Program Coordinator. I have worked for many years in private practice, several years as an EMDR therapist, and also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children in Virginia Beach. I have provided parenting workshops to foster and adoptive parents, training to therapists, training to psychologists and group home/orphanage staff in Nicaragua, and have presented at state and national conferences.
When I am not working, I enjoy being outside, practicing yoga, reading, being involved in my church, and serving people who are homeless with PIN Ministry.
